When I first say a picture by Leonid Afremov (Alley by the Lake), I was captivated by the vibrancy of colours used in his compositions. The amount of texture achievable by use of a palette knife alone is amazing.
From the colours in the sky, Big Ben gives the impression of looking towards the Houses of Parliament on New Year’s Eve while the spectacular fireworks display is going off.
For me, the trees in the foreground perhaps look a little out of scale with the buildings. Also I’m not sure the perspective of quite true – I can see under the arch of the bridge whereas the river bank wall (bottom right) seems to indicate we’re viewing from above. But having said that, what’s wrong with a bit of artistic licence.
While I have to say that Big Ben isn’t one of my favourites, and don’t actually live anywhere near London, this picture captures the night time lighting beautifully.
